HHA remains at the forefront of emergency care within the countries we work.

We work in some fragile countries that are prone to political instability, natural disasters and war. These events always impact the most vulnerable and HHA have been quick to respond every time. This has been a central part of our work since we were founded, responding to major hurricanes in Haiti since 2008, the devastating earthquake of 2010 and Haiti’s cholera epidemic, one of the worst to hit a single country. HHA responded by helping in the development of north Haiti’s largest Cholera Treatment Centre, a 250 bed facility at our partner hospital, alongside an extensive community outreach programme. This work, in cooperation with other groups, helped reduce the cholera related mortality rate from 13% to less than 0.5%, saving thousands of lives.

More recently we’ve been providing emergency relief projects in Uganda and South Sudan in response to the war in South Sudan. This has included helping to tackle severe and acute malnutrition in the refugee settlements, supporting persons with disabilities, and implementing a number of health and education projects. Working through our trusted local partners who have the grass root knowledge of their communities, alongside careful coordination with Government authorities and other partners, HHA remain on the frontline of emergency care in some of the world’s most fragile countries.

We provide life-saving community and facility based healthcare in Haiti, Uganda and South Sudan. We equip and empower locally led health initiatives in a range of ways, including through training and mentorship, infrastructural improvements, medical equipment/materials and financial support. We help a range of health projects, but specifically focus on maternal, neonatal/infant and trauma care.

FACILITY BASED CARE

In 2007, HHA co-founded Hopital Convention Baptiste d’Haiti (HCBH), a general hospital in northern Haiti which is now one of the region's leading facilities. HCBH is a 100+ bed hospital that employs over 300 Haitian staff and supports over 30,000 patients a year.

In 2012 we co-founded the hospital's Maternity and Neonatal Unit which now supports over 1,600 deliveries a year, helping some of the region’s most high risk pregnancies. The neonatal unit is also a regional referral unit and supports over 600 babies a year, receiving premature babies from as far as 75 miles away. The hospital also provides general and orthopaedic surgery, trauma, internal medicine, rehabilitation and other clinical services. Every day through HHAs support, HCBH provides life-saving care to those across northern Haiti.

HHA have now operate a disability care centre in BidiBidi refugee settlement, Uganda, providing prosthetic & orthotic services, wheelchairs and much more for both hundreds of refugees and other local people every month.

In 2023, we extended our reach into Kajo Keji, South Sudan but establishing a new community health clinic focussed around supporting the most vulnerable as refugees begin returning home. This new clinic already sees 1000 patients a month!

COMMUNITY BASED CARE

HHA support a range of community health programmes in Haiti and Uganda, focused on providing care for the most vulnerable women and children. This includes enabling local partners to provide effective health care and prevention in the community, through immunisations, health education, malnutrition treatment and the identification and referral of high risk cases that need the assistance of a clinic or hospital.

Our work includes empowering Community Health Agents and Traditional Birth Attendants in remote Haitian villages and equipping 3 UNHCR Refugee Settlements in Uganda with the CRADLE project which helps support the most high risk pregnancies. Every year, thousands of women and children are supported through these efforts.
